The following are the highlights of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Japan on Monday.

TOKYO -- China and Japan Monday reached consensus on issues including the East China Sea, food safety and maritime communication to further boost bilateral ties.

Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama held talks here and agreed to reestablish a hot line between the premiers of the two countries.

The two leaders also agreed to launch negotiations on implementing principled consensus on the East China Sea issue, speed up the establishment of a maritime communication mechanism between defense departments of the two countries, negotiate and sign an agreement on maritime rescue at an early date, and establish a cooperation mechanism on food safety.

During their talks, Wen said the world economy, though in a complex and difficult situation, is recovering and the world is undergoing far-reaching changes. Sound China-Japan relations are not only in the interests of the two countries, but also of vital importance to reinvigorating the Asian economy and building on world harmony and sustainable development.

TOKYO -- Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called on Japanese entrepreneurs Monday to make further contributions to the cooperation between the two countries.

Addressing a welcome luncheon given in his honor by the Japanese Business Federation, the Chinese premier briefed the participants on what the Chinese government has achieved in tackling the global financial turmoil, as well as China's current economic situation and its major tasks.

Wen said great progress has been made in bilateral economic and trade relations since the normalization of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1972. China and Japan have become a major trade partner to each other, bringing their economic ties increasingly closer and paving the way for a greater future for cooperation.

TOKYO -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday joined a group of well-known figures in Chinese and Japanese cultural circles to discuss ways to further boost cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Culture serves as a bridge to link the hearts of different peoples and different countries, Wen said.

He noted that China and Japan share a history of friendly exchanges of 2,000 years, and have formed inseparable cultural ties, which constitute unique wealth in their bilateral relations.

The Chinese premier said that cultural exchanges have played a crucial role in normalizing and further developing China-Japan relations, adding that cultural exchanges between the two countries are noted for their extensive scope and rich substance.

"One of the objectives of my Japan trip is to boost cultural exchanges between the two countries and enhance friendship between the two peoples," Wen said.

Premier Wen arrived here on Sunday for a three-day official visit. Japan is the second leg of his four-nation Asian tour, which has taken him to South Korea. He will also visit Mongolia and Myanmar.
